Catalonia has become the first comprehensive destination in the world to receive the Biosphere Responsible Tourism certification, which guarantees the traveller enjoy a sustainable, protecting the culture, improving the local economy and reducing the impact on the environment. Catalonia, with 31 million tourists a year, is the first large tourist destination, beyond cities or specific destinations, which achieved this certification which gives the responsible tourism Institute, Member of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
Last January, the Minister Felip Puig signed the paperwork to start the process to obtain this recognition, making visible the “firm commitment” of the Government by this model of responsible tourism. Show Catalonia aims to be the first region in the world with seal Biosphere.hasta now, the Biosphere label for destinations had been given to geographical areas less extensive, as for example in United States Yellowstone Park or the fjords of Norway. To achieve such recognition, destinations must meet a hundred requirements established by Unesco.
At a ceremony in Barcelona, the conseller Puig pointed out that this certification is international recognition to the work that is being conducted by the Generalitat in the field of tourism with the collaboration of different institutions and the private sector.
